Earbuds

The client

Earbuds is a social music platform: it lets people listen along with friends, musicians, celebrities and athletes in real time, sharing what is playing rather than sharing a link to it. CodigoDelSur built the Android version, integrating both the Spotify and Apple Music SDKs alongside chat, photos and real-time notifications.

The challenge

Live shared listening has an awkward fact at its centre: the music does not belong to the app. Two people in the same session may be on different services, with different catalogues, playback SDKs and licensing rules. Keeping those two playbacks in step, so a shared session feels like one room rather than two people approximately listening to the same song, is the whole product.

our approach

CodigoDelSur built the Android application, integrating the Spotify and Apple Music SDKs so users on either service could join the same live session, and implementing the shared playlists, chat, photo sharing and real-time notifications that make a listening session social rather than solitary. The notification layer matters more here than in most consumer apps: a live session is only live if people find out while it is happening. Stack: Android, Kotlin, Spotify SDK, Apple Music SDK.

The result

The Android version of a live social music platform was delivered, with Spotify and Apple Music kept in sync inside a single shared listening session. Shared playlists, chat, photo sharing and real-time notifications were built around the listening experience across a fifteen-month engagement, from 2020 to 2021.
