Vartender is a collection app for whiskey enthusiasts: scan a bottle's barcode, find it in a database of more than a thousand whiskeys, and keep a catalogued collection with tasting notes, aroma notes and ratings. CodigoDelSur built the iOS MVP over six months and then the Android version.
The promise of the product is one gesture: point the phone at a bottle and have the app know what it is. Everything else follows from that, and everything else is easy by comparison. Making it work meant a barcode scan that succeeds on curved glass in the low light of a bar or a cabinet, and behind it a whiskey database large and clean enough that the scan usually finds something.
CodigoDelSur built the iOS MVP first, over six months, and then the Android version. The work covered barcode scanning against the bottle database, the collection and inventory interface, tasting and aroma notes, and ratings. Behind the app, a Node.js backend on AWS served the catalogue, with content managed through Strapi and scraping used to build and maintain the bottle database itself, which does not exist off the shelf.
